Semi-Transparent vs. Solid Stain
- → Semi-transparent. Shows the wood grain through the color. Natural look that enhances cedar's beauty. Needs re-application every 2–3 years. Most popular choice for new fences.
- → Solid stain. Hides the grain like paint but penetrates the wood instead of sitting on top. Better coverage for older or imperfect wood. Lasts 3–5 years between applications. Good for hiding color mismatch from repair patches.
When to Stain
New fence: wait 2–4 weeks after installation for the wood to dry and accept stain. Pressure-treated pine needs 3–6 months before the chemicals dry enough for stain penetration. Cedar can be stained immediately after a short drying period.
Best months in Austin: March–May and September–November. Avoid summer staining when temperatures consistently exceed 95°F — stain dries too fast and doesn't penetrate. Avoid rainy periods — the wood needs to be dry and you need 24 hours of dry weather after application.
